Stock# 2345...1911 Peerless original lithograph on cardboard/ measures 9.5 inches by 19.5 inches (approximately)/ item is matted onto modern architect board/ This item is notable not only for the wonderful Peerless automobiles depicted but the very precise rendering of the showroom structure/ this building still exists. The Peerless Motor Car Building is famous today for what adorns its rooftop. A giant neon sign advertising CITGO gas towers above the building as a beacon to Kenmore Square. A product of the 1960s, the triangular sign’s predominantly blue and red colors are visible at night and can be seen all along the Charles River and from other parts of the city. The area’s largest bookstore, Barnes and Noble at Boston University, is housed in what was once the Peerless Motor Car building of 1911. This automobile showroom became the first in an "automobile row" which stretched from Kenmore Square to the what was once called Packard’s Corner. For the Peerless Motor Car Building in Boston, "... Peerless hired A.H. Bowditch to design the center garage while Andrews, Jacques & Rantoul designed the building and showroom." (Thanks for architectural information provided by Darrin VonStein, who took the time to send corrected information.) This lithograph was printed by Walker Lithography & Publishing Company of Boston. This company printed beautiful litho maps for wall hanging among other things. Their maps have probably survived in good numbers. Advertisements such as this one probably have had a high attrition rate. This item was probably used in theaters, buses, trolleys, transportation terminals, etc. If anyone has any additional info, it would be nice to know. The condition of this piece is good but not mint. It has a few wrinkles and a couple of tears which on the mounted board do not show very much. Truly this is a great item for architectural collectors as well as automobilia collectors. Peerless was one of the highest quality cars of its era costing ten times as much as a Model T Ford. One last note, the Peerless sign in front of the building was apparently electrified with numerous light bulbs. This was truly a high tech building of the day and a truly neat piece of automotive history...$220. |
